| When a man named Roger Payne wrote a letter to the editor of the Decatur Daily (January 19, 2003), I had no idea who he was. It was such a bizarre letter that, honestly, I thought it was a hoax--a joke. But now I know Mr. Payne was not joking--he was doing his best to be serious. He made the claim that a female killed Karen, because of the fact she was stabbed "in the breast and lower private parts with brute force." He therefore "smelled a cover-up." He did not believe dwm "did it" and vowed that "we, the people" would continue to fight to free him. The Daily gave it credibility, printing it days before sentencing, knowing better than anyone that Roger Payne had no earthly idea what he was talking about. He wasn't at the trial; he had no connection to the case whatsoever. All he knew about it was what he'd read in the paper, and what he'd heard from his small circle of similarly-impaired cohorts--like David W. Kelley and Linda Kubina. Roger Payne has never held public office, although he's certainly tried. His last campaign for City Council lost badly. He'd planned to run for Sheriff the third time, but he prayed and God told him to run for Council instead. Roger Payne last worked as a handyman for Ray Metzger. Prior to that, he was a night watchman at DCA Ready Mix. He once worked for Hillsboro's Police Department, but says he had to leave the job because of "political conflicts" and "unsafe police cars." He is disabled because of back problems and cancer surgery. He has a long history of conflicts with elected officials. When he lost the Sheriff race in 1990 he tried to have the Sheriff arrested for missing a deadline on campaign finance disclosures--unsuccessfully. Having lost a bid for Council, he criticizes the Council's every move. He claims his son was abused by DPD during the Crabbe funeral procession, and he literally threw gloves at the Council. Roger Payne contacted the Department of Justice to report corrupt police handling of Karen's murder investigation--with no connection to the case, and no knowledge of SOA v dwm whatsoever. He is yet another absurd chronic Courthouse complainer seeking attention. He will lend his voice to anyone complaining against City Hall--even a rapist torturer killer. |
