The lowest-functioning chronic City Hall complainers can scream POLICE MISCONDUCT a million times (and have), and it won't change the simple fact that the Decatur Police Department gave prosecutors more than they needed to send DWM to death row, where he belongs. They turned over everything to everybody they were required to under the law, and to no one else (much to the chagrin of the Decatur Daily). Every time an allegation was made in court, it was answered--and the judge never ruled the police had withheld anything. Even when the judge awarded a new trial, he specifically stated the convictions and sentence were not contrary to the law or to the weight of the evidence, and he made no ruling that DPD had withheld or delayed release of any evidence. There's a real problem when the simple truth isn't considered newsworthy by the press, and overt fools get exposure... at the EXPENSE of the truth.
The Decatur Police Department's investigation was tested in court. It passed, with flying colors. It will pass the test again, if necessary. And again. It's too important not to. You see, I'm not the only person in Decatur that took it personally when Karen was killed.
I talked to Mike Pettey many dozens of times in 1999. It was made abundantly clear to me that if I, or anyone I knew, had anything to say about anything to do with Karen's death, they needed to call or come right down and tell him. He'd be happy to listen. To ANYTHING--even if we thought it was stupid. And if I, or anyone I knew, had any problem with anything he was doing, then we should come right down and tell him. He could take it. It was simple. Two of DPD's most experienced officers were dedicated full-time (and I don't mean 40 hours) to the REAL investigation for a year and a half. The third officer in the division, Officer Delgado, had to do triple duty that year and a half to keep everything else running. And if you're interested, Chief Investigator Mike Pettey reported only to his Sergeant, Barry Hamilton. Barry Hamilton reported only to his Lieutenant, Dwight Hale. And Dwight Hale reported only to his Captain, Kenneth Collier. And Kenneth Collier spoke for the DPD to the press. If you're really interested in SHOCKING news, go back and read every quote Captain Collier gave to the Decatur Daily. About how I was in Huntsville at the time of the murder. Or how forensics was causing unacceptable delays. Or the only three ways you catch a killer--eyewitness, confession, and trace evidence. Or his comments at the time of the arrest... about how the press had been way out of bounds for the past year and a half. But I forgot--those comments were never covered in the Daily. He had to "sneak it in" on a live press conference... It wasn't newsworthy, you see.
