Today, October 22, 2003, the Court of Criminal Appeals gave dwm his second trial. It's
official now: last November's ordeal is held "for naught," as if it never happened.
Easy for them to say.
The order is one sentence: "Upon consideration of the above referenced Writ of
Mandamus, the Court of Criminal Appeals ORDERS that said petition be and the same
is hereby denied."
There were over 16,000 murders in the U.S. in 2002, an increase of 1% since
2001.
There were over 95,000 forcible rapes reported, up almost 5% since 2001.
Roughly 1/3 murders remain unsolved, and almost 2/3 of the rapes.
There is a violent crime every 22 seconds in the U.S.
The region with the highest crime rate is the South.
For perspective, consider that 1/3 of all killers are never charged with the crime.
Of all the killers who are charged and convicted of the crime, 1/100 receive the
death penalty. Of those killers who receive the death penalty, 2/100 are
executed.
We can summarize by saying in 2002 that about 16,000 murders took place, and
just less than 10,000 killers charged. Even if all 10,000 were convicted of
murder, then approximately 100 would receive the death penalty, and
approximately 2 will be executed some years from now.
